Historical context
Machu Picchu is one of the most spectacular attractions in South America.
These remarkably well-preserved Inca ruins are located high in the Andes, in a lush cloud forest above the Urubamba Valley, north-west of Cusco, Peru. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was later selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World following a global online vote in 2007.
Machu Picchu remains shrouded in mystery, and archaeologists still do not know its exact purpose. It is believed to have been built in the 15th century by the Inca ruler Pachacuti.
Although the Spanish conquest led to the collapse of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu appears to have been abandoned before the Spaniards ever reached it.
There is evidence that the access paths to the citadel were deliberately burned. Combined with its remote location, this meant that the city remained unknown to the wider world for almost 400 years.
When Hiram Bingham rediscovered Machu Picchu in 1911, much of the site was still largely untouched.

Discover the culture and history
Our Machu Picchu journeys offer far more than unforgettable nature experiences – they also provide deep insight into Peru’s rich culture and history:
Cusco: explore the historic city, once the capital of the Inca Empire, and discover its impressive colonial architecture and remarkable archaeological sites.
The Sacred Valley of the Incas: travel through the Sacred Valley with its picturesque villages, colourful markets and fascinating Inca ruins.
During the years when the Inca Empire was at its height (1471–1525), Copernicus was born, Michelangelo was commissioned to paint the Sistine Chapel, and Magellan first set anchor in South America.
“Machu Picchu” was not the name the Incas gave to the site. Hiram Bingham was told the name “Machu Picchu” by a local farmer in the Quechua language – a term meaning “old peak” or “old mountain”.
The Inca Empire was the largest empire in the history of South America. At its peak, it controlled a vast part of the continent and ruled over around 12 million people. Only about 300 to 1,000 people lived at Machu Picchu itself, most of whom were members of the Inca nobility.
Machu Picchu was built without the use of mortar. Using a technique known as ashlar masonry, the stones were cut into precise shapes so they fit together perfectly – so accurately that not even the blade of a knife can slip between them.
Hundreds of terraces below the citadel prevent it from sliding down the mountainside. These andenes, or agricultural platforms, were an Inca farming technique that allowed them to master the steep Andean terrain and cultivate crops such as maize, potatoes, quinoa and coca.
Machu Picchu also served as an astronomical observation site. The sacred Intihuatana stone was used as a clock and calendar, with the sun aligning directly above it at the equinoxes and illuminating it during the summer solstice. This helped the Incas determine the best times for planting and harvesting.
The vegetation surrounding the site is lush and diverse, including more than 300 species of orchids.
Llamas roam freely among the ruins, and this animal was also sacred to the Incas. Some parts of the site are shaped like a llama, and evidence of ritual llama sacrifices has been found in the temples.
For travellers who enjoyed the balance of fascinating history, varied landscapes and ancient cultures at Machu Picchu in Peru, Mexico is an excellent alternative. This Central American gem offers an extraordinary blend of cultural and natural riches – from iconic Mayan sites such as Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, to dramatic cenotes and volcanoes, as well as colourful colonial towns. Just like Peru, Mexico brings together living traditions, outstanding cuisine and remarkable archaeological discoveries, creating an experience that feels both authentic and wonderfully immersive. Take a look at Puraventura’s journeys through Mexico to discover more.
