The Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu

A Season-by-Season Guide for Thoughtful British Travellers

Imagine standing atop the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, the first rays of Andean sunlight warming centuries-old stone walls, the sweeping Urubamba Valley unfolding below like a masterpiece. Choosing when to make that dream a reality is key to feeling confident, comfortable and truly immersed in this singular experience — whether you’re crossing it off your bucket list or looking for a treasured repeat visit.

Explore Machu Picchu with Viventura

Prime Season (Dry Months: May to September)

For most travellers drawn to Machu Picchu, the period between May and September is the most rewarding. These are the dry months in the Andes — crisp mornings, blue skies and minimal rain create ideal conditions for exploring both the citadel and the surrounding trails.

  • Weather: Days are generally sunny and dry, with pleasantly cool temperatures perfect for sightseeing and light trekking.
  • Views: Clear skies offer unrivalled vistas of the Lost City and its mountainous backdrop — picture a landscape as vivid as the Lake District after a summer rain.
  • Crowds & Planning: June to August represent peak season — great for weather, but busier on site and in Cusco. Early booking for permits and trains is essential.

If you love that feeling of a perfect summer’s day, akin to a late-June afternoon watching cricket at Lord’s, these months deliver the Andean equivalent. Yet be mindful: more visitors means tickets and accommodation sell out quickly.

Shoulder Months (April, May & September, October)

For a delightful balance of reliable weather and fewer fellow travellers, the shoulder months are often the sweet spot.

  • April & May: The end of the rainy season and the start of the dry offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds than high summer.
  • September & October: As the dry season shifts towards the wetter months, skies often remain clear and temperatures comfortable, with the bonus of gentler visitor levels.

These periods give you the best of both worlds — lovely weather and a sense of space to take in the ruins at your own pace.

Rainy Season (November to March)

Machu Picchu is open year-round, and visiting during the rainy season can be a unique choice.

  • Landscape: Afternoon showers transform the Andes into a rich, emerald paradise — a reminder that nature here can be as dramatic as the Scottish Highlands in spring.
  • Advantages: Fewer tourists mean quieter mornings on site and often lower travel costs.
  • Considerations: Rainfall is heavier — especially in January and February — and trails may be slicker, so good footwear and flexibility are helpful.

While some prefer the predictability of dry months, others savour the rich colours, softer light and serene mood that the wet season brings.

Practical Tip: Acclimatisation and Travel Comfort

Machu Picchu sits high in the Andes, and altitude plays a part in your comfort. Most travellers spend a couple of days in Cusco (3,400 m) to acclimatise — allowing you to enjoy the site without unnecessary fatigue. Think of it as easing into your adventure like settling into a well-appointed country house for a weekend break.

On all of Viventura's tours where you can visit Machu Picchu, we take this into consideration to help ensure you are able to truly appreciate the beauty of this incredible site.
