Sunrise Tatacoa desert
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

To catch the breathtaking sunrise in the Tatacoa Desert, you rise with the early morning light. Nestled between mountain ranges, this valley is in a rain shadow, making it wonderfully arid. Even as the temperatures hover around 28 degrees all year, you remember to stay hydrated during your walk.
The desert's terracotta-colored landscape, etched with gullies and channels, evokes a stark beauty reminiscent of the moon's surface. Once part of the ocean floor, these rocks were home to immense prehistoric creatures. Today, the sun's play of light and shadow dances among the rugged rocks and sharp cacti, mimicking the movements of these ancient dwellers.
After your tour, amidst the lively desert winds, you continue your journey to San Agustín, situated near the equator in the south. During the roughly six-hour bus ride, you savor the shifting landscapes and cloud formations floating by. Horseback riding to Chaquira
Archeoligical Park San Agustin
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Transportation: Private Bus (1:00h), Horseback riding (4:00h), By Foot (4:00h)
Viventura Plus: A souvenir to remember the fascination of the archaeological sites.
After a relaxing breakfast, you'll start your morning by visiting the Archaeological Park of San Agustín, one of South America's most significant yet less explored excavation sites, spanning about 50 km². This ancient civilization left behind imposing tombs and hundreds of stone sculptures. As you gaze at the massive statues, you'll be impressed by the precision and skill of these long-lost artists. The peak of this culture is believed to have been around the 10th century AD, centered here in the Andes, near the treeless highland moor Páramo, where the rich rivers Río Magdalena, Río Cauca, and Río Caquetá originate. Today, both the San Agustín area and the archaeological park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Continuing from here, you'll travel to the nearby Río Magdalena, where the Chaquira Gorge unveils its breathtaking landscape and another intriguing cultural site. From horseback, you'll discover the rock-carved reliefs. If the weather is favorable, you can ride onwards to "El Tablón," another site featuring stone sculptures and even colorful figures to explore.
If you prefer to leave horseback riding to your fellow travelers, you can opt for a guided hike to the Chaquira Gorge. On this approximately four-hour tour, a local guide from the lodge will show you the most impressive corners and views of these lush, green-covered rock formations (costs around €50 per group). You'll spend the evening at your familiar accommodation in San Agustín.
Note: The horseback riding excursion is conducted and accompanied by a local provider. It requires a basic level of fitness, is weather-dependent, and may involve some risk. Participation is voluntary and at your own responsibility.

In the morning, you embark on a journey to the magical Cocora Valley, where you discover Colombia’s national tree, the Quindío wax palm. These slender trunks tower up to 60 meters high, making them the tallest palm species in the world. Standing amidst the gentle hills and the oddly upright trunks, you feel as though you've stepped into a prehistoric film set—half expecting a creature from another world to appear around the corner.
You arrive there in style on a "Willy," one of the colorful, open jeeps from the 1940s, originally brought to Colombia by US soldiers after World War II. Today, they are the iconic transport of the Coffee Region, gently rocking you with plenty of charm and a sense of adventure along winding roads to the heart of the valley.
Part of the Los Nevados National Park, the Cocora Valley is within the Central Andes Reserve, with the snow-capped peaks as your steadfast companions on this tour. During a four-hour hike, you ascend the valley to the misty forest, where cooler temperatures cause the high humidity to condense, enveloping the trees in a fairytale-like fog. Along the way, you discover the delicate blossoms of numerous orchid species, and with luck, you'll spot woodpeckers and toucans with their strikingly large orange beaks. For those preferring a slower pace, join the group to the first viewpoint over the valley, then turn back to explore down below until the group returns.
On your way back from the stunning Cocora Valley, you reach the charming town of Salento, whose colorful houses still reflect the pioneering spirit of late 19th-century settlers. Along the narrow streets, numerous shops invite you to browse for artisanal treasures. Afterwards, you can unwind in your new accommodation, perhaps on the rooftop terrace of the attached restaurant, reflecting on the day's hiking adventures.
